How is the Scout Section run?

Youngsters aged 10 ½ to 14 year olds enjoy Scouting as members of a Scout Troop. Based on the Patrol System, where teams of boys and girls work together, led by a Patrol Leader of a similar age, Scouts have a huge range of activities from which to choose. In Ingleborough District, active Scout Troops operate in both Ingleton and Settle.

As in the other Sections, the main role of the adult Leaders is to make sure that their Scouts have a chance to take part in a balanced, challenging and exciting programme which delivers skills for life by a variety of methods including games, activities, challenges, events and visits.

The opportunities are endless including camping, hiking, navigation, climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, canoeing, archery, caving, pioneering, bouldering, shooting, grass sledging, orienteering, swimming, first aid, tracking, digital skills, art, crafts, fire and water safety, community service, reading, writing, PR and media, to name but a few.

Activities

What does a Scout do ?
Youngsters are encouraged to develop their leadership skills and to take responsibility for themselves and others. They also learn to delegate, help the community, listen to others and make decisions through a vast array of activities, challenges, badges and awards reflecting every conceivable interest and recreation. For instance, the Outdoor Challenge includes pitching and sleeping in a tent for two nights, cooking on an open fire, playing a wide game, building a pioneering structure and exploring the countryside. The Adventure Challenge includes a choice of hill walking, climbing, orienteering, canoeing, paragliding, caving, cycling and pony trekking activities.
