Tabitha Brown, a Settle Scout, reports on an exciting, traditional  camping weekend with Dan Nelson, her Scout leader, and the Castleberg Scout Troop.

“On 13th July, we set off to Great Tower for the annual Scout camp. When we arrived there was already a lot of things we could be doing – like filling up the water bottles and setting up the fire. This year we were in tents, unlike last year when we were in a bunkhouse, so we had to set them up ourselves.

There was never a dull moment at camp. There was always plenty to be doing – and if you had free time you could do some of the challenges set by Dan to gain points for your patrol. You had to keep the fire going quite often for making your own food, so collecting firewood was an important job (Esmé was our best collector!). On Saturday we went orienteering around the campsite, to find certain numbers. Our patrol spent the largest amount of time exploring, but after a bit of accidental off-roading we ended up getting the wrong numbers. After two hours we only managed to get three of the right numbers! However, we had an amazing time, learnt how to use ‘tick features’ and how to follow things other than the path using the compass.

We had to cook all our food, otherwise we would have had nothing. The leaders weren’t feeding us, but occasionally they gave us an idea of what to cook and a helping hand. It was fun, and different from one meal throughout the entire weekend. One of my favourite things about Scout camp happened on Saturday night – the campfire! We all invaded the Explorer’s camp, sang songs and dried off after the explosive water fight. I really like the campfires because it has a nice community feel and everyone is enjoying themselves.

I don’t have a complete favourite part about camp – it was all so fun. I will certainly do it next year. It is great as you gain experiences that you wouldn’t usually get – so if you get the chance to go to Scout camp; TAKE IT!”
