Den building SIESU Spoon Making

Throughout March the sections enjoyed some super programmes including den building for the Ingleton Cubs and an Easter craft eggstravaganza for Settle Scouts.

Jo Wulf, a District Instructor helping with the South Ingleborough Explorer Unit also reports that Settle Scout Leader, Dan Nelson, led a fascinating session for the Explorers on whittling. She says, “We had a lesson in spoon making from Dan. There was a briefing and demonstration showing how to saw a piece off a branch and to split it carefully with the axe before the whittling can begin. As he showed us how each tool could be used, Dan pointed out the box of plasters, and how we could best avoid needing them! Only two plasters were needed, one by me! We found the session really riveting, and relaxing, and decided to bring our spoons back for a second week to finish them off nicely. Thanks for a great session Dan!”

Recently Dan Nelson also featured in the Yorkshire post Magazine. The article showcased his skills as a shoemaker, a traditional craft that is called upon less by the average buyer living in a throwaway society. Nevertheless, his talents are still in high demand for a niche market so it is good to see that his expertise and years of practice are being put to good use.

Sadly, the article didn’t mention Dan’s devotion to Scouting and his interest in bush craft and camping, which, along with his quiet manner and motivational approach, makes him such an excellent Scout Leader.
