In September a series of initiatives which are designed to recruit new members in the south of the District were launched. Assemblies were run in Austwick, Settle and Hellifield Primary Schools and flyers distributed in Clapham, Long Preston and Giggleswick by Alan Bennett, a member of the Regional Growth and Development Team, which supports Groups and Sections across England. The aim was to give youngsters a taste of the fun and adventure that Scouting can offer, and allow adults to discover that volunteering with the Scout Association is both an enjoyable and a rewarding way to get involved in the community.

A series of science experiments, organised by Estelle Mortimer and supported by Michael Gudgeon, proved to be messy but great fun! Mixing syrup, cordial, Fairy liquid and oil resulted in wonderful coloured layers which glinted in torch light. Fizzing bicarb and vinegar also proved to be of great interest, especially when ‘dancing’ sultanas were introduced to the  mix! Let’s hope that the visitors enjoyed their session so much that they want to return next week.
