John’s Road to Morocco
16 July 2017

John        Explorer belt

We wish Settle Scout Leader, John Nelson, well on his travels during his exciting Explorer Belt expedition trekking across Morocco with four other Network members from York Ebor District.

The criteria for the award are that the team must undertake a 10-day expedition outside of the UK with a minimum travelling time of 50 hours over the 10 days, by foot, cycle, horse, canoe, boat or dinghy. In order to take part the participants must show competence in navigation skills, expedition cooking, lightweight camping, language, acceptable home hospitality, fitness, proficiency in mode of travel, team building and first aid. The team must also keep a logbook of the expedition which records the places they have visited, the route taken, project work undertaken and their personal thoughts. In addition, the team also has to undertake one major project and at least ten minor projects. On their return, the members need to attend a debrief and make a presentation of their expedition, prior to their formal assessment.

This award clearly requires determination, practical skills and a spirit of adventure so it great to see a young person from a dedicated Scouting family, who has progressed through all the sections to become a leader, stepping up to this demanding challenge. You can follow John’s progress on the @EborExplorerBelt2017 Facebook page where the team are sharing their stories and photos.
