Throughout 2016, up and down the country, Cubs commemorated one hundred years of the Cub Scout section with a variety of local and national activities. The culmination of their celebrations was a Promise Party, a national event that included a Promise renewal, held on 16th December to commemorate the official registration date of the Cub section.
As part of her new role as ADC (Cubs), Cathy Tazzyman took on the task of co-ordinating the Ingleborough party to celebrate the ‘wildest birthday ever’. The District held their festivities at Mealbank Hall in Ingleton where Cubs from Settle and Ingleton joined together to enjoy an exciting evening of traditional games and party food, with disco music provided by Explorer Scouts. In contrast to the lively games, the renewal of the Promise took on a quieter tone with youth and adult members thoughtfully repeating the words
whilst making the Scout sign. A huge cake was paraded into the hall and a rousing round of ‘Happy Birthday’ echoed around the room. Finally, as part of a Moving Up ceremony, Cub Leader Gill Allan wished an Ingleton Cub well as she symbolically moved to the troop, where she was welcomed by Kat Unsworth, the Scout Leader – a fitting reminder that Cubs are an important part of the wider family of Scouting.
It was a delight to see Settle and Ingleton Cubs and their leaders enjoying a special shared experience and one that, hopefully, they will remember for many years to come. Let’s hope it has sown the seeds of friendship and co-operation which will grow throughout 2017.
